December marks the season for celebration, joy and reflection. While many of us have already made holiday plans with our families; the unfortunate reality is that there are children throughout Columbus who don’t have any family to go to, often seeking refuge at the Huckleberry House.
That is why we have partnered with the Huckleberry House to put on a surprise holiday event for the youth at the crisis shelter. As an annual event we do every year, I’ve included below a draft itinerary for the day:
10:30 AM - Until kids arrive (Typically around 1:00 PM)
Activities, Presents, & Party
Kids arrive - 5:30 PM (We’ll open presents, have pizza, candy, and other light snacks during the party)
Activities may include (send any ideas you have for activities):
- Video Games (Madden or NBA2K)
- Manicures and or Pedicures
- Cookie Decorating
- Board Games
6:00PM - 7:30PM (We’ll need folks to either bring prepared dishes and/or help make food)
Understandably, everyone won’t stay the full time, so as we frame out each segment of the day with volunteers and local leaders, I want to make sure we have folks present all day.
That’s all for now. I’m excited to be working with everyone to make this happen for our youth throughout the city.
The Huckleberry House works with Central Ohio’s at-risk youth and families who are dealing with some of the most difficult problems imaginable. Issues like abuse, violence, neglect, poverty, and homelessness.
We, the young democrats of the State of Ohio, of the United States of America, associate ourselves together to establish this constitution. The purpose of the Central Ohio Young Black Democrats is to introduce, develop and encourage an active interest in governmental affairs and the electoral process at the local, state and national levels of the United States of America among the African-American community throughout central Ohio. This organization shall foster and perpetuate the philosophy, principals and goals of the Democratic Party by: developing leadership skills in our members, contributing to the well-being of our community at large; and providing for our people through the administration, the highest degree of justice and social welfare.
